Training the immunologists of tomorrow

Training the immunologists of tomorrow
For almost 50 years, the Center for Immunology of Marseille-Luminy (CIML) has been one of the leading research schools in immunology, having trained generations of researchers, many of whom are now leaders in the discipline, both in France and internationally.

The CIML plays a central role in the training of scientists specializing in immunology, in all its dimensions: immunophysiology, immunobioinformatics, immunotherapy, immunodiagnostics, immuno-oncology, immunology of infections, neuroimmunology, etc. In partnership with Aix-Marseille University (amU), it welcomes students from all backgrounds, from the Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences to the Doctorate, in a scientific environment of excellence. It also trains students from the Professional Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology-Immunology, engineering schools (Polytech), as well as doctors and other health professionals. Students are trained primarily through practice, by directly participating in fundamental, translational, and clinical research projects, in close collaboration with our academic and hospital partners. They benefit from personalized supervision, privileged access to cutting-edge technological platforms (genomics, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, imaging), and training enriched by seminars, workshops, and group events.

International openness is also a pillar of this training, supported by our partnerships with leading institutions (Harvard, Karolinska Institute), our interdisciplinary networks (CENTURI, Cancer & Immunology Institute) and our integration into a dynamic innovation ecosystem combining biotechs and local entrepreneurial initiatives.

Finally, the CIML maintains close interactions with regional stakeholders — other research institutes, including the CRCM, as well as with hospitals and clinicians — thus strengthening the link between research and medical practice.

Provided by lecturer-researchers from the UFR Sciences et Santé, as well as by researchers and engineers from the CIML, this training combines scientific rigor, creativity and openness to the world to prepare future immunologists to meet the major challenges of tomorrow.

The CIML Education and Training Advisor, Dr. Carole Berruyer, serves as a link between the UFR Sciences et Santé and the CIML direction team, providing support on teaching and student life issues. She also advises the direction team on ways to support teacher-researchers, ensure their visibility, and enhance the attractivity of immunology training at the CIML.

Master & PhD

CIML welcomes students with open arms

Every year, more than 50 Masters and Doctoral students, from training courses in France or abroad, join the research teams of the CIML, and about ten of them defend their thesis in the institute. The majority come from the Master's in Immunology from Aix-Marseille University, but profiles from additional training, such as bioinformatics, also enrich our teams.

Their passage to the CIML constitutes a decisive step of their scientific background:

  • immersion in a research environment of excellence,
  • learning through practice,
  • development of creativity alongside internationally renowned immunologists,
  • direct contribution to major discoveries.

True to the spirit that presided over its creation, the CIML offers a training through research intended for curious and ambitious students, eager to gain autonomy and open to thescientific exchange.
