Acronym: TollSOME

Obesity is a global health challenge linked to diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. While it often stems from an imbalance between calorie intake and energy use, genetics also play a key role. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are conserved proteins that activate the immune system by recognizing microbial components or molecules from endogenous damaged cells. Among them, TLR7detects single-stranded RNA and is known for its role in autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and Sjögren’s syndrome. We hypothesize that TLR7, beyond its role in autoimmunity, also contributes to the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The objective of the project is to study how TLR7 and dendritic cells influence these conditions to develop new therapeutic strategies that can prevent obesity and improve metabolic health.
